Marking of Oversize Vehicles or Loads
A sign of the same type required for an escort vehicle under the provisions of Rule 672-2-06 (2)-June, 96 shall be mounted on both the front and rear of a load over 8'6" wide, 13'6" high and 100' in length. Signs shall say "Oversize Load". The letters shall be black on an orange or federal yellow or orange backboard and shall be at least 8" high and 4" wide. The background shall be at least 1' high and 6' wide. In addition, a square red flag, 18" on a side, shall be displayed at the corners of both sides of such over width vehicle or load, at both the front and rear.

Towing Vehicle: The requirement for an amber light on a towing vehicle or load is based on dimensions of the load's height, width and length on your permit. You shall need an amber light permit. For amber light permit application call: 404-624-7433.
As a condition of the issuance of a permit, the Department when it deems necessary in the interest of public safety in any case, may require the use of a front or rear escort or both.
672-2-06 Escorts of Permitted Vehicles or Loads
FOR ANY PERMITTED LOAD:
A. Whose length exceeds 75' but is less than or equal to 100' a Rear Escort/Amber Light is required with light permit decal.
B. Whose length exceeds 100' but is less than or equal to 125' a Vehicle Rear Escort is required.
C. Whose length is greater than 125' a Vehicle Front and Vehicle Rear Escort is required.
D. Whose height is 15' 6" or greater a Vehicle Front Escort with a Height Sensor is required.
E. Whose width exceeds 12' but is less than or equal to 14' 8" a Vehicle Front Escort and a Rear Escort/Amber Lights is required for travel on a 2-lane roadway.
A Vehicle Rear Escort with amber lights is required for the same permitted load to travel on a 4 lane highway. For any permitted load whose width exceeds 14'8" up to and including 16', a Vehicle Front Escort and Vehicle Rear Escort is required for movement upon a 2-lane highway. A Vehicle Rear Escort only is required for movement of the same permitted load on a 4 or more lane road, Rear Escort/Amber Light STAA Interstate System.
Houses will require a police Front Escort and a Vehicle Rear Escort.
ESCORT VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS
Escort vehicles must be an automobile or pickup truck equipped with a revolving Amber Light or Strobe Light at least 8" in diameter, located on top of the vehicle. The Light shall have a minimum candlepower of 35,000 and 80 revolutions per minute.
AMBER LIGHT PERMIT
The Escort operator must obtained a permit from the Department of Public Safety of Georgia for the use of the light as required by said Dept.
Signs: A sign shall be mounted on the front of the Escort vehicle (for a front Escort) and to the rear of the Escort (for a rear Escort). The size of the sign is the same as above under truck signs and flags. Signs shall say "Oversize Load". The letters shall be black on an orange or federal yellow or orange backboard and shall be at least 8" high and 4" wide. The background shall be at least 1' high and 6' wide.
Radio: It must be equipped with two-way radio, which is in good working order. The driver will have to maintain constant radio contact with the driver of the permitted load and other Escorts of the same load.
When four or more vehicles overtake and follow an over dimensional vehicle, the Escort vehicles and the permitted load shall pull over and allow the traffic to pass. Send for: Application for Designation as Emergency Vehicle and Emergency Light Permit to

Unless otherwise shown on the permit or further limited by specific rules hereinafter provided, said person will insure that the movement of a permitted vehicle or load with take place on Monday through Saturday, from one-half hour after sunrise to one-half hour before sunset Eastern Standard Time or Eastern Daylight Savings Time, whichever is in effect for the period of the year.
No movement during the following legal holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Permitted loads in excess of 12' wide shall not travel when visibility is less than 600' or when the ground wind exceeds 25 miles per hour. No travel into or through Atlanta, GA area bounded by 1-285, unless you are picking up or delivering in the city.
Curfew hours are 7 a.m. to 9 Am. - 4 to 6 p.m., Monday-Friday.
Permitted loads in excess of 1O' wide, will not exceed a maximum speed of 55 miles per hour, or the maximum posted speed, whichever is lower. The preceding is the maximum authorized speed under any condition.
Any permitted load over 16' in width, shall be restricted to travel between the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for major cities. Call the permit office for the specific locations.
