TRUCK OVER DIMENSIONAL PERMIT LIMITATIONS

Weight: Single-24,000 Lbs; Tandem-45,000 Lbs; Tridum-60,000 Lbs; Quad-68,000 Lbs; GVW 150,000 Lbs.

Width: 18’

Loads exceeding 18' wide, 18’ high and 120’ long, 150,000 Lbs or exceed bridge structure limitations require special permit application.

 

TRUCK SIGNS & FLAGS

All overdimensional vehicles and loads shall have min. 12"x12" red or bright orange flags displayed on the front and rear of traffic side of load. In addition, when the overall length of an overdimensional load exceeds 75', an 18"x84"

"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign shall be displayed on the rear. Letters shall be 10" high with 1 5/8" brush strokes. If the load movement is overlength only, exceeding 75' in overall length, a 1’ x 5’ “LONG LOAD” sign may be used in lieu of the “Oversize Load” sign. Letters shall be 8" high with 1-inch brush strokes. The lettering on either sign shall be black on yellow background. If the load movement is overwidth and/or overheight only, flags are required, but a sign is not required.

 

ESCORT REQUIREMENTS

All movements exceeding 14'6" in overall width not exceeding 16' in overall width, one pilot car precede at a distance of 300 to 700 feet on two-lane highways. On four-lane divided highways there are no pilot car requirements. In lieu of the pilot car requirement, the overwidth vehicle itself, or vehicle towing or hauling an over width load, may be equipped with a lighted rotating or flashing amber light or lights that are visible from front and rear for a min. 500'. All movements exceeding 16' in overall width, one pilot car precede the movement at a distance of 300 to 700 feet and one pilot car follow the movement at a distance of 300 to 700' on two-lane highways. On four lane divided highways one pilot car follow the movement at a distance of 300 to 700'. Anything over 18' in width may require a Highway Patrol. All movements exceeding 120' in overall length, one pilot car follow the movement at a distance of 300 to 700'. All movements exceeding 18' in overall height, one pilot car precede the movement at a distance of 300 to 700' in city. All self propelled earthmoving equipment that exceed legal axle weights, one pilot car follow the movement at a distance of 300 to 700' on all highways because of a maximum speed limit of 20 mph. The NDDOT may require one or two pilot cars on other overweight movements when deemed necessary. The combinations of the above may require one or more pilot cars as determined by DOT chief engineer, bridge engineer, district engineer(s) or no Highway Patrol. When operating in convoy, additional pilot cars will not be required provided that each unit in convoy keep at least 1,000' apart so as not to hamper passing traffic. ESCORT VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS

Vehicle must be a passenger vehicle or 2-axle truck only. Vehicle must meet requirements of North Dakota Century Code, Title 39. The driver of the Escort vehicle must have a valid driver's license and be 18 years of age or older. The vehicle must have on the highest part a sign that is minimum 12" in height and 60" in length with the words "Oversize Load" on it. The sign shall be yellow with black lettering. The lettering shall not be less than 8" high and 1" brush strokes. In addition, flashing amber Lights shall be mounted on both ends of the sign. In place of the two alternating Lights, there can be 1 centrally mounted revolving amber Light on the top of the sign. There shall be radio communication between the Escort and the vehicle being escorted. All Escort vehicles not registered in this state shall be required to purchase temporary registration when Escorting intrastate movements.

 

TRAVEL TIME

Travel is permitted Sunrise to Sunset. Loads 110' long can travel past Saturday noon and all day Sunday from sunrise to sunset. Overdimensional loads movements are restricted to travel from sunrise to sunset. Load movements over 16' in width shall not travel from 12 noon on Saturday, all day Sunday and on holidays. Travel is restricted on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. No night time movement, overweight only.
