TRUCK OVER DIMENSIONAL PERMIT LIMITATIONS
Weight: Single & Quad - Vary depending on routing and tire size. Tandem - 50,000 Lbs; Tridum - 60,000 Lbs. Gross Weight: 5 Axles -110,000 Lbs; 6 Axles - 130,000 Lbs; 7 Axles - 140,000 Lbs. Loads over 160,000 Lbs must go to the Structures Division.
Height: Loads 14' high and over must have height survey and require a height pole.
If load exceeds any of these dimensions or weights, refer to the State of New York for Super Loads. Loads 160,000 Lbs and over, 16' high, 16' wide, 100-110' long are considered a super load. To obtain New York permits use a commercial permit service.
The New York State Police requires 2 Business Days Notice for police escorts beginning when we receive the NYSDOT permit. Our policy and rates are at www.troopers.state.ny.us under highway and traffic safety commercial vehicles.
TRUCK SIGNS & LIGHTS
Warning signs shall be at least 7' long and 18" high. Letters shall be at least 10" high with a 1.41" brush stroke. Warning signs shall be at least 2' but no more than 5' from the top of the roadway surface to the bottom of the sign. Amber Flashing Lights: One (1) amber revolving light shall be located on top of the towing vehicle. The revolving warning lamp shall be at least 6" but no more than 9" in diameter. The lamp shall consist of a lamp with an amber lens and not an uncolored lens with an amber bulb. Plain amber lens will provide a visible signal, under normal conditions, from a point at least 1,000' distance. Required warning flags shall be in evidence during daylight hours for all oversized loads. Red or fluorescent orange warning flags 18" square and mounted on the load. There shall be single flag at the rear if the overlength is 2' wide or less. 2 flags are required if the overlength is wider than 2' and shall be located to indicate maximum width.
GUIDELINES FOR SPECIAL HAULING PERMIT REQUIREMENTS
8'-7" to 12' 0" 18"x 18 Red or Orange Fluorescent Flags on staffs at all corners at the extremities of the load or trailer. Warning sign attached to the front and rear of the vehicle.
12'-1" to 13'·11" In addition to the above:
A Certified Escort Vehicle is to lead on two lane highways. A Certified Escort Vehicle is to follow on highways of more than two lanes. Certified Escort Vehicle shall display warning signs, operational bar light on roof, head lights and other external lights shall be turned on.
14'·0" to 15'·11" In addition to the above: No travel Business Districts between 7-9 am and 4-6 pm
16'-0" In addition to the above: Front and Rear Certified Escort Vehicles on all routes. Route Survey required.
Over 16'-0" In addition to the above a third certified Escort may be necessary in the front on two lane highways.
18' or greater In addition to the above a third certified Escort may be necessary in the rear on four lane highways.
65'-1" to 79'-11" 18"x18" Red or Orange Fluorescent Flags on staffs are required on overhang. Warning sign attached to the front and rear of the vehicle.
80'-0" to 89'-11" In addition to the above: A Certified Escort Vehicle is to lead on two lane highways. A Certified Escort Vehicle is to follow on highways of more than two lanes. A Certified Escort Vehicle shall display warning signs, operational bar light on roof, head lights and other external lights shall be turned on.
90'-0" to 99'-11" In addition to the above: No travel Business Districts between 7-9 am and 4-6 pm
100'-0" or greater In addition to the above: No travel New York state between 7-9 am and 4-6 pm. 3 Escort Vehicles on 2-lane highways, 2 front, 1 rear; Front & Rear Escort on highways of more than 2-lanes; Route Survey required.
160'-0" or greater In addition to the above: 3 Escort Vehicles on multi-lane highways unless travelling on interstate highways only, then 2 Escort Vehicles will be required.
13'-7" to 13' 11" Warning sign attached to front and rear of the vehicle.
14'-0" and Over In addition to the above: Escort to lead with height pole. Route Survey required.
ESCORT VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS & GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION
As of January 1st, 1996 certification as an Escort driver is mandatory for all drivers and all those acting as flag persons, who Escort overdimensional loads on the highways of New York State, regardless of where they live. These are loads with a width of 12' or greater, and/or length of 80’ or greater, and/or height greater than 14'. Also included are loads that have an overhang of the load/vehicle which exceeds the main body of the vehicle by greater than 10'.
Certified Escorts are also required when speed restrictions are in effect because of the total gross weight of the vehicle, or other concerns. For more information call 518-457-1155 or 888-783-1685 or refer to NY Certification Manual, Rev. Jan. 1998 the changes that were intended for 2004-2005 have been put on hold indefinitely.
SIZE: Escort vehicles shall have a minimum wheelbase of at least 100" unless otherwise authorized by the Department of Transportation. Effective January 1, 1997, any vehicle used as an Escort which is a 1997 or newer model year must have a minimum 100" wheelbase unless such vehicle is a utility vehicle approved by the Department of Transportation. ESCORT VEHICLE WARNING SIGNS shall be at least 5' Iong and 12" high. Letters shall be at least 8" in height. The legend of the sign shall read: “OVERSIZE LOAD" on both sides of the sign material. Sign shall be mounted on the front and rear of the Escort vehicle and shall not obstruct vehicle identification (license plate) warning lights and other safety devices. If mounted on the roof, the sign must not interfere with the view of the light bar and legend "OVERSIZE LOAD" must be printed on both sides of the sign.
IDENTIFICATION: Each vehicle shall be identified by a proper insignia as mandated by the Department of Transportation. See Appendix B-1 & 2 for insignia, size and color in New York Certified Escort manual. There shall be two insignias per car, one on the driver's side door and one on the front passenger's side door. The insignia may be attached to the vehicle as a magnetized sign, a peel and stick sign or be painted.
MANDATORY EQUIPMENT: All exterior vehicle lights must be turned on during Escort operations. A two-way radio that meets Federal communication Commission standards is required in each Escort vehicle.; A cellular telephone is required in either the Escort vehicle or the permitted load vehicle.; Three emergency triangles and/or flares.; Three emergency flares for permitted night moves.; A fluorescent orange vest with certified Escort insignia on left chest of vest.; A stop paddle; Three 18" by 18" red or fluorescent orange fluorescent flags on staffs, one of which must be weighted.; A class BC or larger rated fire extinguisher. Every front Escort shall have a measuring device attached to the vehicle when Escorting an overheight load. If two front Escorts are required, only one Escort is required to have such a measuring device. Warning Lights for Escort Vehicles shall be located on the roof of the vehicle perpendicular to the length of the Escort vehicle. The warning light bar shall be a minimum of 43" and a maximum of 52" long, a minimum of 10" and a maximum of 13" wide and a minimum of 4" with a maximum of 8" high, consisting of flashing or strobe lights. Each warning light bar shall consist of a minimum of 4 lights. If flashing lights are used they shall consist of at least 2 -95 and 2-150 minimum FPM rotators, mirrors shall be placed diagonally between lights (mirrors to be reflective on both sides). All lights shall be visible on a 360 degree basis from the vehicle for a distance of 1,000' and arranged with at least two lights in each end of the bar light. The dome cover color shall be amber. The Light bar must be manufactured as a single unit, 2 mini light bars are not acceptable.
DAYS AND TIMES OF TRAVEL
A special hauling permit allows travel between the hours of one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Special hauling permits do not allow movements on Saturdays, Sundays, or on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas and from 12 noon the day preceding Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. For the purpose of this section, the day preceding the above holidays only refers to normal working days, that is, Mondays through Fridays. There is no travel allowed between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm in New York State.
EXCEPTIONS: Overdimensional and overweight moves that are within 12' in width and 85' in length and which can maintain traffic flow speed are allowed to move until12 noon on Saturday, unless such Saturday falls on a holiday.
